310-58: House Approves Resolution, Cosponsored by Rep. Smith, Memorializing Charlie Kirk, Condemning Political Violence

Smith said Kirk’s death is a reminder of the dangers of political violence and urged Americans to recommit to civil discourse.”

The measure, H.Res.719, introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), was set for a vote before the full House on Friday. The resolution condemns Kirk’s killing, thanks law enforcement and first responders for their pursuit of justice, extends condolences to his family, and memorializes his work as the founder of Turning Point USA. It also calls on Americans to reject political violence in all forms and embrace the nation’s values of civil discourse and debate.

The bill was passed today on the House floor. In the end, 95 Democrats joined 215 Republicans to vote for the resolution, while 58 voted against it and 38 voted “present.” The House vote divided the chamber’s Democrats. Public statements directly echo the idea that some members were conflicted because they disagreed with Kirk’s past rhetoric but didn’t want to oppose a resolution condemning political violence.

“The assassination of Charlie Kirk is an unimaginable tragedy,” Smith said in a statement. “Charlie’s senseless killing is not only an assault on his strong political and moral beliefs and unrelenting reverence to constitutional principles—it is also an affront to the American values of civil discourse and respectful debate.”

Smith, a senior member of the U.S. House of Representatives, praised Kirk’s ability to connect with young people and inspire civic engagement.

“Charlie Kirk was a young, bright, articulate, and captivating citizen-leader, who loved America deeply and believed that our best days were still ahead,” Smith said.

Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA, was known for organizing campus events that encouraged students to debate and test their beliefs in open forums. Smith highlighted Kirk’s signature “prove me wrong” sessions as examples of his passion for dialogue and the power of ideas.

“A fierce advocate for open dialogue and the power of ideas, he possessed a special gift for motivating young Americans, challenging them to debate,” Smith said.

In his remarks, Smith said Kirk’s death should serve as a reminder of the dangers of political violence.

“In his name, let us recommit ourselves to emphatically rejecting and ending all forms of political violence, as well as continuing to practice our God-given rights to speak freely and responsibly,” Smith said. “While those diametrically opposed to contrary views may attempt to silence others with whom they disagree, objective truth will always prevail. Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk.”
