Notes that voters believe Smith is “honest, hardworking, principled and not bought and sold by his campaign contributors”
Neptune, NJ—Just one day after the editorial board meeting took place, the Asbury Park Press (APP) strongly endorsed Congressman Chris Smith for re-election in New Jersey’s Fourth Congressional District.
In their endorsement, the APP said that Smith’s electoral success stems from the fact that voters believe that he is, “honest, hardworking, principled and not bought and sold by his campaign contributors, unlike many of his Washington colleagues.”
“…We have never questioned his motives or his integrity. The latter is in short supply today, as is the willingness of members of Congress to reach across the aisle to achieve compromise,” APP continued. “On both counts, we believe Smith is the best choice on Nov. 6.”
The Editorial Board noted that, “Over the past 30 years, Smith has never [won] an election by less than 64 percent of the vote.”
They also said, “Smith has helped bring a measure of civility to Congress, something sorely lacking there.”
In contrast, the APP said of Smith’s opponent: “…we have seen no evidence during the campaign that Welle would contribute to an improved political climate.”
They said that Welle, “came across as arrogant and condescending” in the editorial board meeting, and that he was also “repeatedly, and unfairly, dismissive of the congressman’s legislative accomplishments.”
“Welle’s style is the last thing Washington needs,” they said.
“I am deeply grateful for the Asbury Park Press’ endorsement,” Smith said in response. “It is an honor to serve the people of my district, to listen to their concerns and to be a strong advocate for their interests and values,” Smith said. “I hope to continue to do that in 2019.”
